Description: Systems Planning is divided into two sections, transportation plan development and the transportation planning section. Transportation Plan Development either conducts, or manages consultants conducting planning studies and projects for the Agency of Transportation. Principal duties of the Transportation Planning Section include the ongoing process of developing and updating the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and working with the CCMPO in developing and updating the Transportation Improvement Program for the Chittenden County urbanized area. Duties also include managing Scenic Byway projects, support to the Scenic Preservation Council and providing GIS, web development and engineering support services to other components of VTrans and other state agencies.

Description: The enhancement program reflects a growing recognition that transportation programs, while vital for national mobility and international competitiveness, must also be environmentally sound. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) encourages local communities to be directly involved in enhancement projects. Enhancement activities are a means to more creatively and sensitively integrate transportation facilities into the surrounding communities.

Description: The Vermont Historic Bridge Program exists for the preservation of historic covered bridges, metal truss bridges, masonry arch bridges, and concrete arch bridges, and it establishes separate divisions within the parent program. The Program and its divisions call attention to the fact that Vermont's historic bridges are resources of distinct value to the state, with particular benefits and also particular problems. The Program explicitly recognizes that there are economic, aesthetic, and educational benefits achieved by preserving a meaningful collection of different types of historic bridges, and that these benefits far outweigh costs associated with preserving these bridges.
